Temperature

Temperature controls the randomness of the AI's response and the temperature range goes from 0 to 2. The higher, the more random your response is going to be. So if you set a high temperature like 1.8, your AI is going to become really wild and throw some unexpected and creative outputs out there. But if you go for a lower temperature setting of maybe 0.2, it's going to play more safe and sticking to the most likely responses. Remember, going back to the previous video in the course, when it comes to understanding how ChatGPT actually works, it's based on predicting what the next word is going to be. So higher temperatures means it gets more creative in predicting the next word. Let's take a look at this in action. So I've opened up a new chat. I'm going to tell ChatGPT use temperature 0.2 in our conversation. And you can see, of course, using a temperature 0.2 means that the response will be more focused and deterministic with less randomness.

Max Tokens

Max tokens allow you to control the length of the output text, and the length of your output is measured in tokens, which include words, punctuations and spaces too. On average, for English words, one word is roughly five tokens. Now I know what you're thinking. Well, this sounds a little bit confusing. If I want ChatGPT to write me a blog post that is 500 words, why can't I just say, Hey, write me a blog post? That's 500 words. Well, you can do that. And sometimes, it will actually return a blog post not too far off 500 words. However, if you do that same thing 100 times, it's going to be more hit-and-miss than if you use a parameter of max tokens. For example, if we go over to ChatGPT and ask it to set max token limits to 2500 as remember, one word is roughly five tokens. So 2500 tokens is going to be thereabouts 500 words. You can see ChatGPT has actually acknowledged what I've asked it to do, and now I've gone ahead and asked it to write a detailed blog post on Five Tips to Stay Healthy in Summer. And I've told ChatGPT that the Post should include an introduction detail on each tip and a conclusion as well.
